Common Name: Californian Lilac
The vast majority of Ceanothus are evergreen shrubs - those that keep their leaves year-round. If you want to use Ceanothus for screening, then an evergreen would work best. If your garden is exposed choose a deciduous variety that will be less prone to frosts and wind damage. They are easy to grow, as long as you give the conditions that they enjoy in their native habitat – a sunny, sheltered spot, and well-drained soil.
| Soil: | Well drained soil |
| Aspect: | Full sun |

| Extra Info: | Once established, they are fairly drought tolerant and shouldn’t need regular watering – it is this trait that makes them a popular choice for dry and Mediterranean-style gardens. |

| Toxicity: | No reported toxicity to humans or pets but ingesting large quantities could cause stomach upset |
