Common Name: Cotoneaster

These shrubs and small trees bear an abundance of berries in autumn. Larger cultivars are useful for hedges, wall shrubs and specimen plants. Smaller low-growing plants make good weed supressing groundcover.

Soil: Well drained
Aspect: Full sun for best flowers and fruit but will tolerate part shade. Shelter from drying winds.
Max Height: 1.5m - 2m
Extra Info: In spring and early summer, small pink-white flowers cover the branches. These are followed by clusters of red-orange or yellow berries in autumn/winter. Plants are mainly evergreen, with some deciduous cultivars that blaze with fiery autumn colour.
Type: Evergreen
Toxicity: Cotoneaster berries are toxic to both humans and household pets. The main reason for such toxicity is the production of cyanogenic glycosides, which are compounds that can release cyanide when broken down. Cyanide is toxic to humans and pets in sufficient quantities.
