Gardening Jobs for May from Meadow Grange Nursery

Hello May!

May is usually the month that everything in the garden seems to burst into life 🌸 The days are noticeably longer and the risk of the frost is slowly diminishing ⛅️ Keep an eye on the forecast, of course, but it’s going to be fairly safe to start hardening off and planting out any tender plants.

Whether you have a huge space to play with or just a few pots on a patio, May is a very busy month for gardening!

Your plants will be hungry at the start of the growing season so it’s time to start feeding. A liquid feed for pots and containers will give your plants a good head start. Roses will appreciate a boost of rose food and beds and borders can be sprinkled with an all purpose fertiliser 🌿

With the warmer weather waking up your plants, it is also waking up the weeds! Keep on top of them - little and often is better to prevent them rooting too deep.

S

upport climbing plants before they get too big to manage - tie the stems loosely in place to help keep them upright.

May is a busy month for gardeners, but also one of the most rewarding 😍

  1. Plant up hanging baskets, but keep them in the greenhouse or porch for a few weeks to establish, before putting them outside.
  2. Remove faded spring bedding, such as wallflowers and forget me nots and add to your compost bin.
  3. Pinch out the shoot tips of bedding plants and young annuals, such as fuchsias, to encourage bushier growth
  4. Apply liquid feed to tulips, daffodils and other spring bulbs to encourage a good display next year
  5. No mow may Sadly, we've lost 97% of our flower-rich meadows since the 1930s. These are vital for important pollinators such as bees and butterflies. No Mow May helps replace some of that loss. It allows daisies and clover to flower, and encourages pollinators to your new meadow. Pollinators are vital, as they allow plants to fertilise, develop seeds, and produce fruits, so by taking part in No Mow May, you're doing something amazing for nature. No Mow May can also help tackle pollution and help lock away carbon below ground.
