Gardening Jobs for February from Meadow Grange Nursery

Hello February!

February is the perfect month to get your garden ready for the exciting season ahead.

Longer days are very close, so now is the time to get prepared!

We know you cannot wait to get back outside, and there is plenty to do while the weather is still cold, so check through for our handy list of jobs for the month.

Wrap up warm and get outside to prepare, prune and plant your way through February ❄️ 🌷

  1. First early seed potatoes can be placed in a right, first free spot indoors, buds facing upwards. Once the shoots start sprouting, leave them to grow for 4 – 6 weeks before planting outside.
  2. Start to sow seeds from late February. Summer favourites such as tomatoes and cucumbers can be sowed in pits and left on a sunny windowsill or greenhouse to germinate.
  3. If your garden isn’t frozen or waterlogged, now is a good opportunity to plant new trees or shrubs. This can give them a chance to acclimatise before beginning new root growth in the Spring.
  4. If you want a spectacular summer display, you can start some summer bulbs off now, by planting them in tubs indoors. Some bulbs such as Agapanthus thrive in pots and are ideal to plant now and be moved outside when the weather is warmer.
  5. Spring Clean! On a dry day, give your greenhouse or cold frames a good wash with soapy water to get rid of any lurking pests or diseases.
  6. When snowdrops have finished flowering, they can be lifted and divided before replanting. This encourages spread, resulting in a spectacular snowdrop display next Spring.
  7. Winter pruning encourages Spring growth. If you haven’t already, this is the time to prune roses, fruit bushes and trees. Pruning in winter can also control the spread of pests and diseases.
